Film Adaptations of Literature

Paper-Specific GuidelinesIn a well written 6-page minimum, double-spaced paper, analyze the nature of the two adaptations of one of the following sources:Option 1:the two major adaptations of Solaris (you may briefly make supportive reference to other movies viewed this semester and make brief, but relevant supporting references to the source novel.OROption 2:the two adaptations of Lolita. You may briefly make supportive reference to other movies viewed this semester and make brief, but relevant, supporting references to the source novel.
Whatever your choice, your essay’s focus should remain similar to that of Paper 1. It should articulate an understanding of thenature of the adaptations as adaptations and only reference the source novel when you are pointing out an adaptational departure that changes either the meaning or the intent. I do not want a detailed analysis of the source, other than to reference something significant in either the discourse or the story (I am referring to these in narratological terms) of the source novel that helps you to discuss the adaptations.Note on Lolita: If you are writing on Lolita, do not use the word pedophile or pedophilia too freely and dismissively. (Do not rely too heavily on the word “pedophilia” or “pedophile” without theoretically opening up the term. I would avoid using clinical terms, which will distract you from what you need to focus on and limit your ability to analyze or characterize the nature of the two adaptations. Analysis requires a personal (emotional or moral) distance.
Essays must be a minimum of 6 full pages. You do not need to provide a title page or a bibliography–they do not count.
