Literature Review on Infomercials

This literature review will cover studies done on the ad campaigns of television infomercials.
Questions:What are some of the most successful infomercial ad campaigns?What are some unsuccessful infomercial ad campaigns?What are the advertising strategies of these ad campaigns?Why are these strategies successful or unsuccessful?
Description:Your job is to set up the rationale and scope for your research proposal. Your paper will introduce the problem or issue of focus in commmunication studies, introduce the theoretical framework for your problem, or explore prior research on the topic, including problems or gaps in the research. The literature review should clearly make an argument for your proposed study and be organized by themes as you provide a thorough description of research that is relevant to your research question or hypothesis(es). Your job is to demonstrate that you have thorough knowledge of the subject you are studying. Your job is not to list all possible works (or even as many works as you can), but to reveal the research most pertinent to your subject. The absolute minimum should be 15 sources, including 10 from scholarly journals related to communication studies. More sources are likely to be needed for an A or B paper.You need to provide the known findings relevant to your focus, and some meaningful academic research about how you might explore the topic (what are acceptable ways to operationalize and measure variables, what are common factors that need to be considered, etc.). You must end the literature review with the research question or hypothesis(es) you propose to explore. Keep in mind that you will later write a methodological paper that outlines how you will study your research question/hypothesis(es), but will not actually conduct the study.If you are engaged in a rhetorical criticism, you may include some popular press that sets up the historical context and popular reaction to the message under study. You might use a little to set up a context for other studies, such as, an analysis of which social medium is most effective in establishing a specific type of message with a specific demographic group, might include some popular press on current trends in use. However, the bulk of your research will come from academic sources, primarily communication journals. You may use relevant articles in academic journals from other fields. It is essential that you include review all of the academic literature specific to your communication act – if you are writing a paper about Nike’s branding, you should read what the scholars have written about their branding. If you do not find enough that is specific to your focus, you may broaden your search. For example, additional academic research about likely branding strategies and techniques that are relevant.You are strongly encouraged to follow the following pattern. If you plan to use a different organizational pattern, see me first. The literature review should be organized as follows:A brief rationale for your area of study.An analysis of existing research, grouped by concept, not article. For example, if my first, fourth and sixth articles all deal with a specific concept, I should cite all three when discussing the concept. If the first, second, and tenth deal with a different concept, cite those when writing about that concept. At no time should you organize your analysis article, by article. It is the concepts that are important.The most important part of the literature review is the formulation of the research question or hypothesis(es). The research question is grounded in one of several ways. First, one of your authors may have suggested a question that deserves more attention. That can be your invitation to do research. Second, your authors may disagree about a particular concept, and your ability to take a position on that disagreement may serve as the focus of your research. Third, your authors may have missed something. You may have noticed that I discussed concepts A, B, C, D and F earlier. What happened to E? My goal was to demonstrate that sometimes other authors miss something that is clear to you. That is clearly an invitation to do more research.The paper should be approximately 2,000-2,500 words. It should be double spaced, typed, with margins not to exceed 1¼ inches. You should use a 12-point font. Arial, Calibri, Cambria and Times New Roman are acceptable font choices. If the paper is concise and thorough, you may consider going over the maximum page limit. However, each additional page should be warranted and efficient. Shorter papers will be considered insufficient. Headings / subheadings may use a distinguishing font size. Number all pages. You also need a References page at the end of your essay. You do not need a cover sheet. If you include one, that is not part of the page count. Use proper APA format. As always, the paper should be submitted via the Canvas assignment submission function.Criteria for Evaluation:Rationale – The writer presents the rationale for the study and situates it within the relevant body of research, noting how the research fills gaps, resolves conflicts, or otherwise contributes to known findings within research.Quality of the research question/hypothesis – The writer offers questions that are measurable, important, and justified by the literature. The research questions or hypotheses are situated well within the context of communication analysis.Argument – The writer consistently offers arguments that are developed and supported. The author offers clear claims supported with sound evidence and quality analysis.Research – The writer integrates relevant, credible, and scholarly sources throughout the essay. Research findings are blended into quality arguments. The writer does not simply list, quote, or paraphrase the research of others. The minimum expectation is fifteen quality sources. Higher quality work incorporates additional sources.Organization – The writer presents ideas in a clear and logic format consistent with academic scholarship. This includes strong introductions and conclusions to major sections, and effective transitions throughout. Each paragraph begins with an effective topic sentence which frames the development of the rest of the paragraph.Academic writing – The writer expresses meaning clearly and concisely. The writing prioritizes relevant findings and omits methodological details from other research, except when they are essential to the author’s argument. The writer presents a scholarly essay, free of errors in grammar, mechanics, and use, that is tailored for a scholarly audience.APA style – The writer uses the 7th edition of the APA Style Manual accurately (in-text and end-text citations) and consistently while avoiding plagiarism.
