Write a paper Applying a “sociological perspective” and using a “sociological imagination” to better understand the world and our own unique place in it, can be challenging.

Chapter 1 introduces students to the discipline of Sociology, explores how it relates to other academic disciplines, and begins identifying what a sociological perspective is and how to use it. In this chapter, you learn about C. Wright Mill’s “sociological imagination” – a key concept that will guide the work we do throughout the semester.Write a paper Applying a “sociological perspective” and using a “sociological imagination” to better understand the world and our own unique place in it, can be challenging. Like many things: it takes practice. This discussion (and all others) are opportunities to appreciate and apply a sociological imagination, to utilize a sociological perspective, while exploring the key points of each chapter and supplementary material posted in the Modules. The discussions are a chance for *me* to see that you are doing the assigned readings and work, and can identify AND articulate key social facts, concepts, and theories from the course. I am assessing you on your comprehension of the assigned material and your ability to articulate key course concepts, theories, & the main points of the readings; while also ‘practicing’ how to use a sociological perspective and employ what C. Wright Mill’s calls “the sociological imagination”.You are not being asked for – nor am I grading – your political/moral/personal evaluations of the assigned readings / course content. Your personal politics and values should be avoided for discussions.Autobiographical and personal reflections should be avoided – this is not a “sociology of me” course 🙂 [but do note: you will have time to share personal reflections during other written assignments]We’ll keep it rather simple to get us started:Select at least 2 things from Ch. 1 that you found interesting / surprising / confusing and share them here in the discussion.note: while I’m asking you to rely on your personal opinion to select content to write about – your post should focus on facts / concepts / theories; and, use reasoning and evidence from the texts to support your statements/summaries.AND: reflect on how Ch. 1 relates to the material posted in the SOCI Key Concepts / Social Location Module
